Studio head Petre Toran and Marathon GM Josh Deane posted a five-minute video today titled The Next Chapter for Bungie. No trailer. No date slide. Just the two of them talking about lost trust, Destiny content that was pulled, and what they want Marathon to become.
Bungie’s own link for the same message: bung.ie/bungiefuture.
They opened with the apology, not the roadmap
Toran (the video on-screen spelling is “Poria Torin”; Bungie has used Petre/Poria depending on the post) said the studio spent years chasing vision and not what players actually liked. Colleagues left. Ambition stalled. Destiny’s “home” felt abandoned. Deane said they are not asking for trust back. They have to earn it in the games.
That is the tone for the whole clip. They admit they have made this speech before.
Destiny: campaigns, destinations, and raids coming back
The line that lit up the comments: they will commit to bringing back Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids that “never should have been ripped away.” That is the Destiny Content Vault, said out loud. No calendar for which raid or which planet lands first. They framed it as step one before new Destiny stories and “games,” plural.
They also said they are not done with Destiny and that Marathon was never meant to replace it. The stated goal is the old promise — mystery, discovery, a community that shows up for impossible fights — after the missing pieces are restored.
Marathon stays, but they want it out of its box
Deane said Marathon launched with decent reviews and a player base that was smaller than they wanted. The plan through year one: keep what already works, then push it past the extraction-shooter limits they put on it. More of a survival game. More ways to take on the world. More player choice in PvE and PvP, including how you build a roster of Runners.
A fuller Marathon roadmap is supposed to land in the next couple of months, with players in the loop.
Studio talk, minus the slogans
They said they cut competing projects, pushed decisions closer to the people building the games, and that “stability” is focus, not a smaller studio. One line will get clipped for weeks: this is not “another service, another train stop.” That is a shot at the live-service treadmill and at the way Destiny used to ship seasons.
The closer is the same as the open. Words will not fix this. Ships will. They asked people to keep them accountable.
What this video does not include
- A date for the first unvaulted campaign or raid
- Whether this is Destiny 2 forever or a new numbered game
- Marathon patch notes or a mode list
- Headcount, Sony’s role, or anything about other unannounced projects
Commenters treated the unvault line as the whole story. Fair. Bungie has promised resets before. The difference this time is they named the Content Vault as a mistake on camera. Until a destination actually returns to the Director, that is still a speech.
